Typically, I stick with Canon gear, but decided to give the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 a try because it is a much newer design, has less vignetting win the center, and has better reviews for astrophotography (which I don't do much right now, but I want to get into). Also, saving $400 from a refurb Canon 24 mm f/1.4 didn't hurt!
EF 24mm 1.4L vs. EF 28mm 1.8? I'm in a sort of dilemma. I want a wider lens for low-light use as I have already a 50mm 1.4. The widest I ever like to use it is at f1.8. I also already have a 17-40L for landscape type of shots, but I like short DOF and smooth bokeh, which 17-40L doesn't give being f4. I use 20D.

Sure, the 24L is not as sharp wide open as my EF 200mm f/2.8 L USM, but it is much better than the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. If you are considering the EF 28mm f/1.8, I'd also check out the SigMa 30mm f/1.4, which is a surprisingly neat lens. The 24L is quite a bit wider and has the advantage of being full-frame compatible.
1. If you crop the 20mm Sigma / 21mm voigtlander to match the field of view of the 24mm Sony GM, they have the same levels of choma more or less. The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 looks appealing because I can find it for $200-300 and it's smaller and lighter than the Sigma, although it has some critical reviews regarding focus speeds. The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM on the other hand has the benefit of being a stop faster at 1.4, though the lens itself is heavier and at least twice as expensive.
The Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro Lens's IS system features an impressive CIPA 5-stops of assistance rating, and coordinated IS with a camera having IBIS allows for up to 6.5 stops of correction. The RF 24mm f/1.8's IS system is extremely quiet, with a barely perceptible "hmmm" heard only with an ear close to the lens.

This moderate ultra-wide angle lens is slightly more expensive than earlier Samyang products, yet it is still offered for about half the price of the "comparable" Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L II. The build quality of the Samyang is on a very high level based on a tightly assembled combination of plastic and metal parts on a metal mount.
Let me put the light gathering abilities of the Sigma 24mm F/1.8 lens in perspective. The Olympus 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens, at wide open aperture and set to a 24mm focal length, is an f/4.7 lens. Ouch. With the kit lens wide open and set to 24mm focal length, I need 1600 ISO to get a tripod shot of my kitchen at around 1/50th of a second.
The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a pancake lens that’s super lightweight, providing a useful equivalent focal length of about 38mm, and it pairs really well with Canon’s lighter APS-C DSLRs. Image quality is great, handling produces no complaints – this is a really solid lens that won’t let you down. $126.95.
